This book insists on the conception of birth and death in Africa in general and within the Bamileke societies in Cameroon in particular. It shows how these events are prepared and managed. Then, rites, practices and actions which surround birth (name of the newborn, treatment of the placenta or umbilical cord, ritual of twins, etc.) and death (coffin, grave, burial, refreshment, funerals, widowhood ritual, succession, etc.) are identified, with special mention to their foundations and the way they are carried out, in order that people consciously adopt, improve or reject them.
